Zika Virus Still a Concern in the U.S.

You are sleeping soundly, and then you wake up to that annoying buzzzzzzzzzz in your ear… a mosquito! Usually, this would just be an annoyance but with the rise of the Zika virus, that annoyance has now become a serious health concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an international health emergency concern over the spread of the Zika virus, now known to cause serious birth defects. In late July, Florida officials announced what appeared to be the first locally transmitted cases of Zika infection in the continental United States. On August 12, the Press Enterprise reported “California apparently ranks third in the number of infected people here, behind New York at 530 and Florida with 322,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Control mosquitoes inside and outside your home

There are several ways to protect you and your family from the threat of the Zika virus, according to the CDC. These include:

  • Covering your windows and doors with screens when your doors and windows are open. You can achieve this by checking existing screens for tears or damages and have them repaired or replaced
  • Covering your skin by wearing long-sleeved tops and long pants, preferably light colors
  • When outdoors, use insect repellent and follow the product instructions for use
  • Make sure if you have containers in your yard that hold water, that you remove the water at least once a week and scrub them clean as mosquitos breed in sitting water
