JANUARY HOME TIP: SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY
Many of us are using our heaters more this winter than we have in four years. If your HVAC system is not in good shape, you are most likely using too much energy to heat your home. Sealing and insulating your ductwork can save you money and energy while keeping your home comfortable.
You can do this pay a professional to come in, and pay approximately $1,000-4,000 for this work. Or you can Do It Yourself and save. You may not be able to access all your ducts as they are usually inside walls, attics, ceilings and other small spaces. Don’t worry, insulating those you can reach will be beneficial.
First, use mastic (metal backed tape, NOT duct tape) and seal all holes, seams and connections. Don’t forget vents and floor registers! Next wrap your ducts in fiberglass insulation. (this can be found at most hardware and home improvement stores). And begin saving energy! You may even qualify for a rebate. Check with your city, county or state!
